Montreal Gazette cartoonist John Collins may have envisionned burly defences on the French border like those found on the bluline at the Forum, but German troops broke through the Maginot line within a few days.
Charlie MacDougall found a clip in the January 31, 1943 issue of a Quebec newspaper picturing the famous Montreal Canadiens "Punch Line" the year before Maurice "Rocket" Richard would join Elmer Lach and Toe Blake. It seems that Joe Benoit had the honour of rounding out the trio prior to leaving the club for military service.

The three player responsible for the push towards the playoffs were recognized as the core of the club. Here we see, from left to right: Jos Benoit, Elmer Lach and Toe Blake. After Saturday's game, the trio surpassed 100 points with 42 goals and 61 assists. Here are the details: Blake 16 goals, 23 assists, 39 points; Benoit: 17-18-35; Lach: 9-20-29.
