Johnny Bower, “Hockey Hall of Fame” goaltending great, will visit his former American Hockey League teammates from the old Providence Reds to participate in the R. I. Reds Heritage Society’s 9th Annual Reunion in Rhode Island the weekend of July 31-August 2, 2009.
Right now, there are a few open seats on the “Bower Bus” that departs from Toronto on Friday, July 31, with other area ex-Reds teammates - Bob Robertson (Woodbridge), Ray Ross (Hamilton) and Aldo Guidolin (Guelph) – as passengers. The four played together on Providence’s last ever Calder Cup championship team of 1955-56
Local hockey fans interested in joining Bower and other great Hockey Hall of Fame members are invited to call Bob Robertson, coordinator for the trip, for more details at 905-851-2675. Deadline for reservations on the bus is July 15, 2009.
This is Bower’s third consecutive trip to Rhode Island heading up a reunion to Providence, where he earned two consecutive American Hockey League MVP awards before making his historic mark later with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Robertson, who heads up the travel committee, has chartered a luxury, 40-seat bus for the three-day event. Family, friends and hockey enthusiasts will join.
The R. I. Reds Heritage Society has arranged three-nights lodging at a 5-star hotel in Rhode Island for the Bower entourage. The weekend’s itinerary follows:
- Friday, July 31, 7:30 PM at “Meet & Greet” reception at the hotel
- Saturday, August 1, 6:45 PM, a sunset cruise of Narragansett Bay
- Sunday, August 2, 12 noon, a reunion barbecue at Goddard State Park
Now in its ninth year, the reunion typically draws about 300 persons, including 50 former Reds’ players. Among them are “Hockey Hall of Fame” members Milt Schmidt, Eddie Giacomin, Ferny Flaman and, of course, Bower.
The R. I. Reds Heritage Society is a non-profit organization whose stated mission is to restore and preserve the 51-year history (1926-1977) of the Providence Reds in professional hockey. The organization was started in 2000 by seven founders and today has nearly 700 members, including over 100 former players and executives of the team.
